Light is a reactive light installation made for the City of Oslo (Oslo Kommune) and the event Oslo Kulturnatt. The work was done with Social Oriented
, consisting of a team of 5 (Tina Stokkan
, Martin H. Sørdal
, Steffen Silseth
, Yann CMB
and I). The installation included 30 black boxes in varying sizes spelling out "Oslo Kulturnatt", placed in a scrambled fashion. It was placed on both sides of the "Art Passage", the passage connecting the east and west side of Jernbanetorget, the main hub of the metro system in Oslo.
All the boxes and letters were hand cut and lined with baking sheets to diffuse RGB-lights hidden on the inside of the boxes. The boxes were connected in several clusters, each activated by their own movement sensor hidden underneath the display cases. The result was a bunch of letters lighting up beside you as you walked through the passage. A hallway which earlier had received complaints about being dark and uncomfortable was now receiving praise from loads of passersby. Because of this, the City of Oslo decided to continue using the same boxes for the next few years. You can read a more in-depth write-up on the website of S.O.D.
